A brief history of august, specialists in strategy, project management and design for Internet-based communication, commerce and collaboration

I (Ian Joyce, principal of august) kicked off my now 20+ year career as a copywriter. After years of grounding in creative strategy and writing for numerous agencies and clients (some very well known, some not) my interest in what made businesses click with customers led me to a place where copy alone wasn't the answer.

That place was marketing. First outdoor recreation products, then health care, education, logistics, financial services, apparel, technology and a range of other industries. I spent time as a corporate marketer and agency client, and working in marketing agencies. I detoured into helping early stage tech entrepreneurs with funding issues. And I consulted with mid-market companies (some very well known, some very well known only within their industries), most recently helping them understand how to use digital media to reach consumers, employees and shareholders.

august came about in 2005. Like many ventures it was the product of dissatisfaction with how others did things, and an interest in bringing a new approach and methodology to my work. I wanted to focus on three simple ideas:

  1. Collaborating with a few clients who want a credible, honest voice addressing their marketing requirements, from strategy through execution, analysis, and optimization.

  2. Delivering creative and programming services that are dictated by customer needs, not my investment in staff and technology platforms.

  3. Accomplishing the first two things in a way that satisfies clients' demands for agility, accountability and value.

So far, so good. Since our launch august has delivered smart answers to marketing dilemmas, and inventive ideas that respect audiences, as well as clients' bottom lines. We've developed strategic roadmaps for growing already mature businesses in the online channel; planned and managed the development of ecommerce sites that utilize NetSuite and other robust e-business platforms; delivered environmental design for large scale distribution centers; and, designed and produced print collateral and national trade advertising. Those are just a few examples.
